The Atkins Clock Company was established in 1859 in Bristol, Connecticut, succeeding an earlier Atkins family clockmaking firm that had gone bankrupt the previous year. The Atkins name was associated with several related Connecticut clock businesses going back to the 1840s, including Atkins, Whiting & Co. and the operations of Merritt W. Atkins, reflecting the close-knit and often overlapping nature of Bristol’s early clock industry.
The company produced brass-movement wall and shelf clocks, including weight-driven regulators, gallery clocks, and cottage clocks, often sold through other retailers under their own labels. Atkins clocks from this era are noted for their quality construction and distinctive case details. The firm later passed to Carlisle and Henry Barnes, who continued production into the 1880s as the Barnes Brothers Clock Company.
