Birge & Co. was part of a long-running family of Bristol, Connecticut clockmakers; Birge and Peck operated in the late 1840s, continuing the Birge family’s involvement in the Connecticut clock trade after the earlier Birge and Fuller partnership. The firm produced wooden and brass movement shelf clocks typical of the period.
The business was eventually absorbed into the wider consolidation of Bristol-area clockmakers, with its interests ultimately passing through Welch, Spring & Co. and being absorbed by the E. N. Welch Manufacturing Company by the mid-1880s, part of the broader pattern of mergers and acquisitions that characterized the 19th-century Connecticut clock industry.
