The Chelsea Clock Company was founded on July 23, 1897 by Boston businessman Charles H. Pearson, who acquired the factory and tooling of an earlier clockmaking venture in Chelsea, Massachusetts. From the outset the company focused on high-grade mechanical clocks with precision escapements, quickly building a reputation for quality.
Chelsea’s most famous product is the Ship’s Bell Clock, first patented around 1898–1900, which strikes the traditional mariner’s watch bell code and was supplied to the U.S. Navy, government agencies, and prestige clients including Rolls-Royce and Tiffany & Co. Chelsea Clock remains in operation in Massachusetts today and is recognized as one of the last manufacturers of mechanical clocks still operating in the United States.
