Antique American Clocks
Chauncey Jerome flat front Empire, ca. 1850.
A popular case style with collectors and one in which
Jerome used many different movements - weight-driven, spring, and fusee, and in 1-day and 8-day formats.
This one contains an
8-day direct fusee movement that I cannot find in any other examples, but it is discussed and illustrated in Roberts,
Connecticut
Clock Technology 1810-1862
, pages 298 and 305.
The fusee is on the winding barrel and the spring is behind a flat barrel directly
below the movement.
The case is 23.5 inches tall with good walnut veneer, book-matched at the center lines and on the diagonal
to give a nice look.
The dial glass is old, the mirror a twentieth century replacement.
The wooden dial is likely original
and in good shape; the hands are replacements.
The 8-day, time-and-strike fusee movement is signed Chauncey Jerome, New Haven,
and is running and striking the wire gong.
There is green paper inside on the backboard and a card label for Chauncey Jerome,
I can't find any recent sales of this model in any configuration, so I'll start it at $200.
