Antique American Clocks
William S. Johnson "Octagon Drop", 1849-1861.
Johnson was a retailer in lower Manhattan, selling
from several addresses over the years on Cortland St.
Here he was at 49 Cortland St., a location today less than a block from
the World Trade Center Memorial.
This was a popular style of wall clock in the 1850's.
It is 24 inches long with good
rosewood veneer on the front; note the flourishes on both sides of the pendulum door; on most clocks like this they are carved; here
they are molded wood composites.
The dial glass is original; the pendulum glass also looks original and has an unusual painted
The dial has been papered over, the hands are unusual and likely original.
The 8-day, time-and-strike movement
is unsigned, running and striking on the wire gong.
A common clock from an uncommon maker of this model; I can find no other
examples of his label on an octagon drop clock.
