Antique American Clocks
Seth Thomas off-center pillar & scroll, ca. 1825.
An early edition of the pillar &
scroll invented by Eli Terry, here made by his former employee Seth Thomas.
It stands 29 inches tall with a cleaned and polished
mahogany case and veneer.
Note the satinwood veneer on the scroll-top; the brass urns are the proper type and mount with steel
Remarkably, I see no repairs to the scrolls; however, I believe the feet have been replaced, and both glasses are modern
with an unsigned tablet.
There is a door lock and ivory escutcheon.
The wooden dial is the proper ST type with a decoration
below the mainstem; the dial shows wear and fading.
The pewter hands are hand-made.
The 4-wheel wood-strap movement is
correct and is running without issue, striking on an iron bell.
There are two proper lead weights compounded on four wooden
pulleys (not all original) and a decent label on the backboard.
These clocks are not too uncommon and this is one of the nicer
ones I have seen, even with the replaced glasses.
This model generally sells for $1200-$2000 when in good condition.
