Description

Atkins Clock Co. “Octagon Drop XX” with 30-day fusee, ca. 1860. In 1855 Atkins, Whiting & Co. dissolved and reformed as the Atkins Clock Manufacturing Co. without significant participation by Adna Whiting; this company lasted only a few years and went bankrupt, leading to the formation of the Atkins Clock Co. Each of these companies continued to make the same clock models, but the poor financial status of ACMCo lead to the termination of the agreement with Joseph Ives in 1856, after which wagon springs were no longer manufactured and a 30-day fusee movement, as found here, was used. The 25-inch Octagon Drop XX case continued to be used, as here, with a 30-day double fusee round movement. Note the use of “tinned steel” gears in this movement, believed to reduce friction. Both glasses are old, but the lower door glass has been properly repainted. The dial pan is a replacement, the hands are likely original. There is a good label inside behind a plexiglass shield. The clock is running without problem. Cottone’s sold a 30-day fusee last fall for $375. $350–$450.
