Description
Bawo & Dotter “Elite” chiming fusee bracket clock,ca. 1910. Bawo & Dotter were New York importers of European goods beginning around 1860; in addition to Limoges porcelain from France, they branched into fine clocks by the 1900’s. They are more commonly known to clock collectors as marketers of elaborate nine-tube tall case clocks, in competition with Walter Durfee. Here we have a small (14-inch) mahogany bracket clock with an 8-day, time, strike, and chime triple-fusee movement. The movement is unsigned but is marked “Elite”, with the serial number 83893. Winterhalder & Hofmeier made many of their movements. The clock plays Westminster chimes on four cathedral gongs and counts the hours on a fifth, larger gong. It is running, striking, and chiming nicely. The pierced brass and silvered dial shows some tarnishing on the silver; Bawo & Dotter is inscribed across the top. There is a speed adjustment and a chime/silent dial. This clock sold at RO Schmitt in 2013 for $2300. $500–$1000.
