Description
Rodney Brace carved column & splat, ca. 1834. A Rodney Brace clock from the early 1830's; note the 1830 census on the label. The case is 31.5 inches tall with period carved pineapple finials, beautifully carved inset quarter columns and a carved fruit basked splat; it stands on paw feet in front and turned feet in back. There is a great patina on the finish. The dial glass is original with a crack in the lower right corner, the lower glass replaced, and the tablet repainted by Tom Moberg. The door is warped and does not close tightly. The dial board is original to this clock, but someone had replaced the Torrington movement with a standard wooden movement and drilled new winding holes in the dial. A previous owner reinstalled a five-arbor Torrington movement, filled the standard movement holes, redrilled the holes for the correct movement, and repainted the dial. The hands are period and correctly sized. I hung the small square iron weights (2.5 lb) but it wouldn’t run, the click-stop on the time side is not catching. AAC sold this clock in January 2023 for $600. $600-$800.
