Description
E.O. Goodwin miniature empire shelf clock, 1851-1855. The case is by Goodwin, the movement by Brewster & Ingrahams, and the retailer is J.J. Beals in Boston. The 20.5-inch case has mahogany veneer; the columns and corbels may be grain-painted to match. There is a missing segment of veneer on the door frame, middle left, and some chips along the base. The three glasses are period, the middle tablet, depicting the Myles Standish house in Duxbury, 1644 may be a repaint, while the lower tablet is original with some touch-up. I am not sure what it shows. The flat metal dial may be a repaint, the hands are period/proper. The ribbed brass movement is signed Brewster & Ingrahams; it will strike on the wire gong and will run for a while – some attention will be needed if you want to run it regularly. There is an old pendulum bob and a very nice J.J. Beals label inside. AAC sold a similar example in 2020 for $325. I like this clock and have one of my own. $300–$500.
