Description

Asaph Hall column & splat shelf clock, 1830-1837. After 1837 Hall left Goshen, CT for Clinton, GA, where he continued to sell wooden works clocks until his death in 1842 at the age of 42. He bought movements from Samuel Terry and others. The case is 35 inches tall with good but dark mahogany veneer and bronzed half-columns and splat. The bronzing is still strong; the full-length door hinges on the left and has a key latch in ivory on the right. Both glasses are original, the large original tablet of a church and adjacent rectory is well preserved, with some touch-up. The rather plain dial is dark but without losses, the hands period/original. There are three penciled signatures on the back of the dial, the earliest being 1848. The 30-hour time-and-strike movement will run briefly and will strike, driven by two 30-hour weights. There is a complete but very dark label inside. There are very few sales by this maker. $100–$200.
