Description

Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 2”, ca. 1874. So, it looks like a No. 1, why is it a No. 2? No. 1’s had a seconds bit above the mainstem; early No. 2’s did not. Later Seth Thomas added a seconds bit to No. 2’s as well. You can see a very similar example in Ly’s Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1, on page 274. The 34-inch case is veneered in either walnut or mahogany (you decide) and has a crusty finish in places. The veneer is in remarkably good condition. The dial glass is old but probably not original, the tablet was rebacked some time ago and is likely original. The dial has been touched up and has some chipping, the hands are correct. The 8-day, time-only rectangular movement is unsigned, driven by a large iron weight falling behind the weight shield. It is running without problem. The pendulum stick and bob are likely original, and there is a good Thomaston label on the weight shield. No date stamped on the back. Nothing not to like here, very original. $600-$1200.
