Gustav Eduard Becker (1819–1885) trained as a clockmaker in Silesia and Vienna before opening his own workshop in Freiburg, Silesia (now Świebodzice, Poland) in 1847. His early clocks followed the Viennese regulator tradition, and his reputation grew quickly after he won a gold medal at the 1852 Silesian Industrial Exhibition, allowing him to attract skilled craftsmen and expand production.
Until around 1880 Becker’s factory produced almost exclusively weight-driven regulator wall clocks; afterward the company introduced spring-driven movements and a much broader range of styles, including anniversary clocks, mantel clocks, and ornate longcase regulators. By the late 19th century Becker was one of the largest clock manufacturers in Germany, exporting worldwide. After Becker’s death the company continued under his name, merging into the Junghans group in 1926, with the Gustav Becker trademark used until about 1935.
