Seth Thomas (1785–1859) was born in Wolcott, Connecticut and apprenticed under pioneering clockmaker Eli Terry before forming a partnership with Terry and Silas Hoadley. In 1813 Thomas sold his interest in that partnership and set up his own factory in Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut, initially producing wooden-movement tall and shelf clocks before transitioning to brass movements in the 1840s.
Thomas formally incorporated the Seth Thomas Clock Company in 1853, and after his death in 1859 his son Aaron expanded the business into one of the largest and most respected American clock manufacturers, eventually known for everything from inexpensive kitchen clocks to fine regulators. The town of Plymouth Hollow was renamed Thomaston in 1875 in his honor, and the Seth Thomas name continued in clock production for over 150 years.
