Waterbury Clock Company

The Waterbury Clock Company was created in 1854 by the brass manufacturers Benedict & Burnham of Waterbury, Connecticut, and formally incorporated in 1857. Located in the heart of Connecticut’s Naugatuck Valley, sometimes called the “Switzerland of America” for its concentration of clock and watch makers, the company became one of the largest producers of clocks for both domestic sale and export.

From the 1880s Waterbury also became a major manufacturer of inexpensive pocket watches, famously supplying the dollar “Yankee” watch sold through Robert H. Ingersoll & Bro. By 1915 Waterbury was the largest clockmaker in the United States. After absorbing the bankrupt Ingersoll business in 1922, the company struggled through the Depression but was rescued in part by a licensing deal to produce Mickey Mouse watches and clocks with Walt Disney in 1933. The company was later renamed United States Time Corporation and became the foundation of the modern Timex brand.
